Serious punishments for not wearing mask at the Hungarian universities
The number of universities introducing stricter coronavirus restrictions from November is rising in Hungary. That is because the number of new infections is growing fast. Even though 60 pc of the population is already vaccinated, that is not enough to stop the spread of the virus. Therefore, the government introduced, for example, obligatory mask-wearing in public transport. They also continue their pro-vaccination campaign. However, numbers show that it will be difficult to convince those, who have not yet accepted the jab, although patients treated in the hospitals are all non-inoculated.
Stricter rules at Hungarian universities
According to eduline.hu, from November, mask-wearing is obligatory in almost all Hungarian universities. However, some institutions switched back to hybrid education.
At Széchenyi István University, students must wear face masks in all public spaces, including the offices. Furthermore, the school asked them to notify the institution if they become ill or are in official quarantine.
Interestingly, the university has launched a pro-vaccine campaign on Facebook for weeks.
At the beginning of the academic year, the shared photos with an inscription: “It is cool to wear a mask”. Interestingly, the institution’s inoculation numbers are good. By October, almost 80 pc of the students received at least their first jab.
At the University of Pécs, obligatory mask-wearing was reintroduced in September during the classes, meetings and offices. From November on, it is mandatory in all public spaces. Students are allowed to take it off only if they eat or do sports. The same rules apply to the students of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
If they refuse to wear one, their teachers can dismiss them from classes and even exams.
Interestingly, the first university prescribing obligatory mask-wearing was the ELTE University in Budapest. They published the relevant announcement before the start of the new academic year. Furthermore, they survey the inoculation rate at the institution weekly. Among the students, it was 87 pc in September, while this number was 90 pc in the staff. Moreover, 97 pc of the researchers and teachers accepted the vaccine.

The Ministry for Innovation and Technology sent a package of recommendations to the universities in August. They said then that the universities should encourage everybody to accept the jab, and wearing a face mask is not obligatory but cannot be banned.
The future is hybrid education?
Today, mask-wearing is obligatory everywhere. The only exception is the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where
students must take it only if their number during a class exceeds 10.
There are some institutions where some lectures are held online. They include the Corvinus University of Budapest and the Budapest University of Economics.
The Liszt Academy introduced hybrid education weeks ago. Classes with more than 20 students are held partly online: half of the group can be in the room, while the others online. They can swap the next week. The Faculty of Informatics at ELTE University chose to teach the same was in September.
The Dharma Gate Buddhist College follows a unique solution. They switched to hybrid education on 2 November, and they allowed their students to choose whether they wanted to take part in the lectures online. The deadline for the relevant application was 25 October.
